When should you select a lower automatic-transmission gear for a long downgrade?
Correct answer: A – Before beginning the descent
Select a low gear before starting down a grade rather than waiting for speed to build. Forcing an automatic transmission into a lower gear at high speed can damage it and may cause a loss of engine braking. Engine braking should provide the principal means of controlling downgrade speed.
