Fulshear Adult Driver’s Education FAQs
How to do drivers ed?
Completing a Texas adult drivers ed course is a straightforward process. If you're between 18 and 24 years old, the state requires you to complete a 6-hour TDLR-approved adult drivers ed program. For those 25 and older, while it’s optional, taking the course simplifies the process by allowing you to skip the written knowledge test at the DPS.
The course can be completed online at your own pace, typically covering traffic laws, defensive driving techniques, and road safety. Once you finish, you’ll receive an ADE-1317 certificate, which you’ll need to apply for your Texas driver's license. Start by enrolling in a course approved for Texas adults, such as the one we offer, and enjoy the flexibility of learning on your schedule.
Do I need to take drivers ed to get my permit?
In Texas, adults aged 18 to 24 must complete a state-approved drivers ed course to obtain a Texas restricted license (similar to a learner's permit for adults). This course includes the Texas DPS written test, so you won’t need to take it separately. Adults 25 and older can opt to skip drivers ed, but they’ll need to pass the written knowledge test at the DPS to get their restricted license. Either way, drivers ed is a valuable step to help you prepare for driving safely and legally.

Is drivers ed free?
Drivers ed is not free for adults, but our course is affordably priced at $34.95. This fee covers all course materials and ensures compliance with Texas state requirements for adult driver education. With the ability to complete the course online and at your own pace, it’s an excellent investment in your driving future.
How many hours do you have to have to get your license?
Adults aged 18 to 24 must complete a 6-hour Texas adult drivers ed course to apply for their license. While no specific driving practice hours are required for adults in Texas, gaining sufficient supervised experience is highly recommended. Adults 25 and older are not required to take a formal course but must pass the DPS written test and the Texas DPS driving test.
What is drivers ed?
Drivers ed for adults is a state-approved course designed to teach essential driving knowledge and skills, such as traffic laws, defensive driving, and road safety practices. In Texas, the course is mandatory for adults aged 18 to 24 and includes the written knowledge test. For adults 25 and older, while optional, it’s a great way to prepare for the licensing process and become a confident driver.
How many driving tests can you take?
In Texas, you’re allowed three attempts to pass the Texas DPS driving test on a single application. If you fail all three attempts, you’ll need to reapply for your driver’s license and pay the application fee again. To improve your chances, consider additional practice or taking Texas in-car driving lessons with a professional instructor.
After you get your permit, what’s next?
Once you receive your restricted license (adult learner’s permit), you should focus on practicing your driving skills with a licensed adult over 21 in the passenger seat. When you feel confident and prepared, schedule your Texas DPS drivers test. Passing the driving test will qualify you for a full, unrestricted Texas driver’s license.
Can I practice driving without a permit?
No, it is illegal to practice driving in Texas without a valid Texas restricted license or learner’s permit. Adults must obtain a restricted license, which acts as a learner's permit, to legally drive under supervision. Driving without the proper documentation can result in fines and delays in obtaining your Texas driver’s license.
Do I have to take the written test to get my license?
If you are 18 to 24 years old, completing a Texas adult drivers ed course includes the written knowledge test, so you won’t have to take it separately at the DPS. For adults 25 and older, you’ll need to pass the written test unless you choose to take an adult drivers ed course, which allows you to skip this step.
What happens after you pass your driving test?
Once you pass the Texas DPS driving test, you’ll receive a temporary paper license that allows you to drive immediately. Your permanent Texas driver’s license will arrive by mail within a few weeks. Congratulations - you’re now ready to hit the road as a fully licensed driver!
